After more than a month of denials, Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz have finally confirmed what many have long suspected: She is pregnant with the couple's first child.
As they did with their engagement, the couple announced the news on FriendsOrEnemies.com: "While many have speculated about this," the couple wrote, "we wanted to wait until after the first trimester to officially confirm that we are expecting our first child. This is truly the most joyous time in our lives, and we are excited to share the happy news and start our family."
Speculation that Simpson, 23, was pregnant began swirling more than a month before the couple's May 17 wedding at her parents' home in the Los Angeles area. In April, Simpson-Wentz evaded the pregnancy question while talking to MTV News, saying she thought it was "an inappropriate question to ask any woman." Wentz supported his soon-to-be bride, telling MTV, "There is a witch hunt for people to be pregnant whenever they get engaged in Hollywood. ... I mean, really, this is crazy.
As recently as last week, when "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest asked Wentz, 28, on his KIIS-FM radio show about the possibility that he would soon be a dad, the bassist again said he didn't know why some media outlets were so quick to report that Ashlee was pregnant, since no one in their camp had confirmed anything.
A report on People magazine's Web site suggests that this could be the first of several Simpson-Wentz offspring. According to the mag, after the couple's wedding, Simpson-Wentz said, "I would love to have a big family one day," with her new hubby chiming in, "A big soccer team or a band!"
